About the Organization
Avalara is a leading technology-driven company that simplifies tax compliance for businesses of all sizes across the globe. Its in-house legal team plays a crucial role in supporting the company’s operations by ensuring regulatory compliance, managing contracts, and handling legal matters with efficiency. The internship program at Avalara is designed to provide law students with hands-on experience in corporate legal functions. Interns will not only gain exposure to in-house counsel work but also learn how legal strategies are integrated with business objectives. This makes Avalara an excellent platform for aspiring legal professionals who want to explore the intersection of law, business, and technology.
Eligibility
The internship opportunity is open to law students expected to graduate in 2026 or later, making it suitable for individuals who are still in the early stages of their J.D. program. Applicants must reside in North Carolina or Washington to be eligible for consideration, as hybrid working options are available for those near Avalara’s Seattle or Durham offices. Candidates should demonstrate strong contract drafting and editing skills, along with the ability to manage legal tasks with accuracy and attention to detail. A proactive and reliable attitude is highly valued, and familiarity with tools like Jira and Ironclad is preferred. The role requires a commitment of 12–15 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week in the summer.
Role and Responsibilities
As a Legal Intern at Avalara, students will work closely with the legal team on a wide range of tasks. Responsibilities include managing contract intake processes, assisting with the drafting and reviewing of commercial agreements, conducting legal research on relevant topics, and supporting attorneys with day-to-day administrative work. Interns will also have the chance to participate in special legal projects, offering a deeper understanding of the unique challenges faced by in-house counsel. This role emphasizes collaboration, adaptability, and professional growth, providing interns with the opportunity to build essential skills that will support their long-term legal careers in both corporate and commercial law.
