
About the Organiser
The essay competition is organised in memory of the distinguished Indian jurist Hormasji Maneckji Seervai, one of the most respected authorities on Indian Constitutional Law. The Gold Medal was instituted in 1997 by Navroz Seervai to honour the legacy and scholarship of H.M. Seervai and to encourage rigorous constitutional research among law students across India.
About the Competition
The H.M. Seervai Gold Medal Essay Writing Competition is a prestigious national-level essay competition focusing on themes in Indian Constitutional Law. Over the years, it has attracted participation from leading law schools across the country and serves as a platform for students to engage deeply with contemporary constitutional issues.
The previous gold medal was awarded to Niharika Mukherjee from National Law School of India University for her essay titled “The Right to Contest Elections and Internal-Party Democracy: A Constitutional Proposal.”
Objective:
To encourage critical research and scholarly writing on contemporary constitutional issues in India and to promote deeper engagement with constitutional law among law students.
Participants must:
- Submit an original, unpublished, and single-authored essay in English.
- Ensure the essay clears anti-plagiarism checks.
- Attach a bonafide certificate signed by the Registrar, Vice-Chancellor, or appropriate authority of the institution.
- Follow OSCOLA citation style for referencing.
- Format the essay in Times New Roman, 12 font size, double spacing on A4 paper.
- Maintain the word limit of 7,000–10,000 words (including footnotes).
Eligibility
Students currently enrolled in LLB / BA LLB / BBA LLB / BCom LLB regular mode programmes in any recognised Law School/College/University in India.
