About the Role
The Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS) is seeking a full-time Consultant/Senior Consultant – Legal & Regulation (Higher Education) to join its Bengaluru office. This is a mid-level leadership opportunity that includes individual legal contribution and independent responsibilities, along with mentoring and supervising junior legal team members.
Key Responsibilities
Legal and Regulatory Work in Higher Education

Draft and analyze legislation, policies, and legal frameworks related to Higher Education at central and state levels.

Interpret and track case law from various courts including Supreme Court and High Courts.

Prepare institutional policy documents and internal process drafts.
-
Provide legal advisory, opinion writing, and support litigation processes.

Conduct regulatory due diligence and advisory for non-profit sector transactions.

Manage legal matters related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

Coordinate with legal and administrative teams on compliance and service-related matters.

Support stakeholder meetings and consultations on regulatory developments.
Research & Academic Contributions

Contribute to IIHS’s broader legal and urban policy research.

Engage in academic, operational, training, and institutional-building initiatives across IIHS.

Undertake travel and assignments as part of the IIHS ecosystem.
Reporting Structure
This position will report to the Chief – Legal & Regulation at IIHS and will collaborate closely with internal teams, external stakeholders, and students.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for a driven legal professional with:

A Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B. minimum).

8–10 years of relevant experience, particularly in legal and regulatory drafting within the Higher Education sector.
Required Skills

Strong analytical and drafting skills.

Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Excellent written English and fluency in Hindi or Kannada.

Deep understanding of constitutional, education, administrative, labour, and privacy laws.

Experience in litigation support and government interactions.

Capacity to work independently and mentor junior staff.

Comfortable working under tight deadlines within an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated leadership and initiative.

Location
This is a Bengaluru-based position, with travel requirements as per project needs.
