The Just Transitions on Indian Streets (JusTIS) Project focuses on justice, livelihoods, and dignity for marginalized urban communities, particularly street-based vendors and informal workers. The project aims to generate meaningful research, policy insights, and stakeholder engagement to create inclusive urban spaces and equitable public policies.
About the Position
NLSIU is inviting applications for two full-time Research Associate positions under the JusTIS Project. This opportunity is ideal for early-career researchers passionate about socio-legal issues, livelihoods, and urban governance. Selected candidates will engage in field-based research, academic writing, policy analysis, and community engagement. The positions are on-site at Bengaluru, with a monthly salary in the range of ₹60,000 – ₹70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This role provides a platform for professional growth while contributing to high-impact, socially engaged research.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Social Sciences, Law, Public Policy, Development Studies, or a related field from a recognized institution. Candidates should ideally have 2–3 years of post-master’s research experience in areas such as livelihoods, justice, or urban governance. Early-career researchers awaiting their Ph.D. defense, whose research aligns with the project, are also welcome to apply. Proficiency in Bengali, Hindi, or Kannada is required, along with strong skills in academic writing, public speaking, and independent task execution. Good time management and the ability to work on multiple tasks are essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
The Research Associates will:

Conduct field research with street vendors, informal workers, and marginalized communities to collect qualitative and quantitative data.

Assist in preparing research papers, policy briefs, and case studies.

Engage in policy analysis of government schemes, urban policies, and legal frameworks affecting street-based livelihoods.

Support data collection, analysis, and stakeholder engagement with municipal authorities, civil society, and unions.

Collaborate with the Project Lead and NLSIU faculty to manage project timelines, reporting, and dissemination activities.
