The NHRC is tasked with safeguarding and promoting human rights, which include the rights to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution of India, as well as rights recognized in international covenants enforceable by Indian courts. Since its inception, the NHRC has played a pivotal role in monitoring human rights issues, advising the government, and spreading awareness about constitutional protections. Its mandate ensures that individuals across the country are protected against violations of their fundamental freedoms.
Eligibility
The internship is open to students across India who meet the specified academic requirements. Eligible applicants include students in their third year or beyond of a five-year integrated law program, those in their third or final year of a three-year undergraduate degree, and students at any stage of postgraduate or postgraduate diploma courses. Research scholars from any academic stream are also encouraged to apply. A consistent academic record with at least 60% marks in Class XII and subsequent courses is mandatory, and students must clearly mention their percentage conversion formula if grades are awarded as CGPA or SGPA. The maximum age limit for applicants is 28 years as of 1 August 2025. Candidates must also ensure their full-time availability during the internship before applying.
Role
This internship offers participants a unique opportunity to engage with the NHRC and understand the functioning of a statutory body that works to uphold human rights in India. Conducted online, the program will expose interns to various aspects of human rights law, policy-making, and institutional frameworks. Participants will attend lectures, workshops, and interactive sessions with experts. Interns are required to maintain strict punctuality and discipline throughout the program. They will prepare a project presentation, submit a written report, and complete a book review as part of their evaluation. Successful candidates will gain practical exposure to human rights issues, equipping them with valuable insights into law, governance, and policy.

Interested candidates must submit their applications online before 3 September 2025 (18:00 hours). Along with the application form, students are required to upload a 250-word Statement of Purpose (SoP) titled “Statement of Purpose for joining NHRC Online Short Term Internship,” which will serve as part of the selection process. Additionally, scanned and self-attested copies of academic mark sheets from Class XII onwards, as well as those of the ongoing course, must be submitted.
