Position Overview:
The role of Legacy Case Officer involves managing a substantial portfolio of UK estate cases where IFAW is a beneficiary. The officer ensures that legacy gifts are administered efficiently, compliantly, and in alignment with the organization’s ethical and operational standards. This position is central to safeguarding and maximizing legacy income through professional probate and estate administration.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Portfolio & Case Management
- Independently manage a diverse caseload (pecuniary, specific, and residuary gifts)
- Review wills, estate documentation, and communications to confirm entitlement
- Identify risks and ensure timely progression of cases
- Maintain accurate and organized case files
- Escalate complex or high-value matters as required
- Income & Financial Handling
- Contribute to income forecasting through case tracking and valuation
- Review estate accounts and ensure proper financial recording
- Support accrual processes and compliance with internal controls
- Identify opportunities to maximize estate value
- Relationship Management
- Liaise with solicitors, executors, and co-beneficiaries
- Maintain professional, empathetic, and clear communication
- Balance income protection with reputational considerations
- Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with UK probate and charity laws
- Apply appropriate scrutiny to estate administration where needed
- Maintain audit-ready records and escalate reputational risks
Eligibility:
Essential:
- Experience in estate administration, probate, or legacy casework
- Working knowledge of UK probate processes and estate documentation
- Experience reviewing financial and estate accounts
Desirable:
- Qualifications or training such as CiCLA, LMAP, STEP, or a law degree
- Experience with residuary or contentious estates
- Understanding of legacy income in a charity context
Core Skills:
- Strong legal and financial document interpretation
- Risk assessment and decision-making ability
- Effective caseload management and communication skills
- Ability to handle sensitive matters with professionalism and empathy
