About the Organization
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a statutory body established on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. It was initially set up through the Protection of Human Rights Ordinance in September 1993 and later granted statutory powers under the Act. The NHRC is tasked with safeguarding and promoting human rights, which include the rights to life, liberty, equality, and dignity guaranteed by the Constitution of India, as well as rights recognized in international covenants enforceable by Indian courts. Since its inception, the NHRC has played a pivotal role in monitoring human rights issues, advising the government, and spreading awareness about constitutional protections. Its mandate ensures that individuals across the country are protected against violations of their fundamental freedoms.
